Tips for Riding at Peak Travel Times

With daily service to San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, the Pacific Surfliner can take you on a scenic ride to some amazing destinations. Plan ahead to help avoid crowds, and make the most of your trip with these tips.

Enjoy Flexibility with Unreserved Coach Tickets

Pacific Surfliner trains offer two types of tickets: Unreserved Coach and Business Class. Unreserved coach tickets allow you to ride any Pacific Surfliner train from the origin station to the destination station listed on your ticket. This gives you the flexibility to take a different train than the one you selected in the booking process if your travel plans change, subject to certain restrictions. Because Unreserved Coach seats are available to boarding passengers on a first-come, first-served basis, trains can occasionally become crowded, especially in the summer and during peak travel periods. On the busiest trains, it may become difficult to find a seat on certain sections of the route.

Avoid the Crowd By Planning Ahead

Fridays and Sundays are typically the busiest travel days on the Pacific Surfliner, especially on the 700-series trains between Los Angeles and San Diego. Consider choosing one of the 500-series trains instead, which are typically less busy, or if your travel plans allow, ride midweek or midday when it’s less crowded. Follow @PacSurfliners on Twitter for train status alerts, including notifications regarding which trains we expect to be particularly busy. With an Unreserved Coach ticket, you can choose to take an earlier or later train at no charge if the one you were planning to take is expected to be crowded. If you are traveling between stations with luggage service, you can check your bags instead of carrying them with you. Stations are marked on the schedule with a suitcase.

Upgrade Your Experience with Business Class

One of the best ways to enhance your travel experience is by upgrading to Business Class. You’ll have a guaranteed seat and extra space to stretch out, plus you’ll receive a complimentary snack and drink, priority boarding in San Diego, access to the Metropolitan Lounge at Los Angeles Union Station, and bonus Amtrak Guest Rewards points. The number of Business Class seats on each train is limited, so it’s best to book early before they sell out. Business Class tickets provide a seat on a specific train, so if you need to change your plans, call 1-800-USA-RAIL or go online to modify your reservation in advance.

Planning for Special Events and Ridership Surges

When a train is expected to be crowded based on historical trends, group reservations and ticket sales, we work to accommodate our passengers by adding extra seating whenever possible. During the Del Mar Racing season, we add an extra Café car to the busiest trains so it’s easier to purchase food and drinks, as well as an extra coach and Business Class car. For major events like Comic-Con, we added an extra roundtrip between Los Angeles and San Diego to accommodate the surge of travelers.

Connect with Nature on the Pacific Surfliner

Southern California is home to majestic mountains, sparkling beaches, flourishing farmland and unique ecosystems that are as diverse as they are stunning. Make plans to explore the outdoors and appreciate the natural beauty around us.

The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner can take you to awe-inspiring destinations and offer a front-row seat to breathtaking sights along the way. Enjoy scenic views of rugged bluffs at Torrey Pines State Park, the coastal wetlands of the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, the rocky hillsides of the Santa Susanna Pass and the roadless, pastoral backcountry near the Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Here are our top picks for outdoor adventures:

Santa Barbara Head to the Beach
The Pacific Surfliner stops at a number of beach towns – Santa Barbara, also known as the American Riviera, is one of the most popular. Just outside of the train station is the Moreton Bay Fig Tree, the largest fig tree in the U.S. From there, the beach is a short walk away. Visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center for close encounters with marine animals, and head to the harbor for some fun on the water. Oceanside is another great option, with wide sandy beaches, whale watching excursions and coastal bike paths.
SLO Hikes Take a Hike
The hills are flourishing from the recent rains, making it a great time to head out on a hike. San Luis Obispo has a number of trails with panoramic views of ocean vistas. There’s also a great trail on the bluffs along the beach near the Carpinteria Station that ends at a harbor seal preserve!
Channel Islands Explore the Channel Islands
Catch an Island Packers cruise from Ventura Harbor and head to the Channel Islands. These islands are also known as the Galapagos of North America due to their diverse array of plants and animals, 145 of which are found nowhere else in the world! At Santa Cruz Island, you can hike high above the ocean with panoramic views, kayak through sea caves and even plan an overnight stay. Check out our Facebook album for more!
Botanical Building Balboa Park
Balboa Park is a must-see destination on any trip to San Diego. From the train station, hop on the MTS Rapid Bus 215 for a quick ride to Balboa Park. Enjoy more than a dozen gardens and 65 miles of trails, in addition to countless museums and the San Diego Zoo.

Did you know?

Fast Facts The 253 million passenger miles taken on the Pacific Surfliner last year resulted in a reduction of more than 91,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases – that’s the equivalent of 9.3 million gallons of gasoline being consumed!
Fast Facts Our new Charger locomotives, which now power Pacific Surfliner trains, are among the cleanest in the nation, and produce 90 percent less emissions than the older locomotives we had before.
Fast Facts All of our Café Cars have recycling containers. With thousands of beverages purchased from our Café Car each month, this is an easy way to make sure those bottles and cans don’t end up in a landfill!
Fast Facts We locally source the food and beverages sold on the Café Car. The shorter distance required transport the food to our warehouse in Los Angeles reduces carbon emissions, as opposed to food that would have to be driven thousands of miles from other parts of the country.

A Day of Fun at the Del Mar Race Track

The summer season at the Del Mar Race Track runs from July 17 through September 2, 2019. Get to the fun with a coastal trip on the Pacific Surfliner.

The seaside Del Mar Race Track opened in 1937 with Bing Crosby (one of the founding members) personally greeting guests as they arrived. It’s also the site of a famously close Seabiscuit race. During the season, there are generally races from Thursday to Sunday, with special activities scheduled for the weekends.

Getting to the track is easy on the Pacific Surfliner. Hop onboard for a beautiful trip along the coast to Solana Beach. Riders ages 21 and older can enjoy a craft beer, Mimosa, Bloody Mary or specialty cocktail from our market-style café. After arriving at the station, catch the shuttle – it’s free for train riders and is offered on days when there are races or concerts.

Follow These Tips for a Successful Ride

Saturday and Sunday are popular days to head to the racetrack on the Pacific Surfliner, and, at times, trains can be busy.

Here are some helpful tips to make the most of your trip:

Pacific-Surfliner-Enjoy-Business-Class Upgrade to Business Class

Consider upgrading to Business Class to have a guaranteed seat and other perks, such as a fully refundable ticket if canceled prior to departure, bonus points for Amtrak Guest Rewards members; complimentary beverages and light snacks; and more.

Pacific-Surfliner-Unreserved-Ticket Choose to Ride Other Trains with Your Unreserved Ticket

If the train you were planning to take is expected to be crowded, consider taking an earlier or later train without having to make any changes to your Unreserved Coach ticket. Bring Your Bike Onboard the Train

Here’s everything you need to know about adding a bike to your Pacific Surfliner trip!

1. Plan Ahead

Each Pacific Surfliner train has room for seven bicycles. Reserve a spot for free while booking a ticket online or at 1-800-USA-RAIL. A bike can also be added to an existing trip by calling the 800-number. Space is limited, so book a spot for your bike early.

2. Learn Which Bikes Are Allowed Onboard

Standard bicycles up to 50 pounds (with a maximum tire width of 2” and no larger than 70″ x 41″ x 8.5″) can be carried onboard Pacific Surfliner trains with a bike reservation. Tandem, recumbent, cargo and fat-tire bikes, as well as trikes and trailers, do not fit in the bike racks, and are not allowed onboard. .

Electric bicycles under 50 lbs. and no larger than 70″ x 41″ x 8.5″ may be carried onboard (with an advanced bike reservation). You can also box and check your electric bike (under 50 pounds and within the allowed size dimensions) if traveling to and from stations that offer checked baggage service. Gas-powered motorized bicycles are prohibited both onboard and in checked baggage.

Folding bikes under the dimensions of 34″ x 15″ x 48″ are permitted onboard without a bike reservation in lieu of a piece of carry-on luggage

3. Know Where To Go

The designated bicycle storage area is located in the cab car (the end of the train opposite from the engine). It is either the first or last car of the train depending on the direction of travel. Arrive at the station at least 30 minutes prior to the departure to give yourself time to prepare for boarding. Once the train arrives, roll your bike onboard to the designated storage area in the lower-level of the car.

Pacific-Surfliner-Bikes

4. Prepare For A Quick Loading/Unloading Process

Oversized seats and storage should be removed from your bike prior to boarding to make it easier and faster to load. Bring your own cords and locks to secure your bike in the rack. Trains do not stop at the stations for long, so give yourself enough time to gather your belongings and bike before arriving at your destination.

5. Have Fun Enjoying Destinations With Your Bike

Traveling with a bike makes it possible to experience your favorite areas in a new way. From popular beaches to tranquil nature trails, here are some stations that are even better with a bike.

San Luis Obispo
The city of San Luis Obispo has been designated as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists since 2007. There is an extensive bike network with more than 75 miles of bike paths and lanes. The Thursday night Farmers Market, one of the best and largest of its kind, even has a dedicated bike valet area, making it easy to ride to the popular event.

Santa Barbara
The options for biking throughout Santa Barbara are endless, but perhaps one of the most popular is the Cabrillo Bike Path. This paved, 5-mile route parallels the beach, offering beautiful ocean views. Pedal to Santa Barbara Harbor, Stearns Wharf, the Santa Barbara Zoo and around the Andree Clark Bird Refuge.

Ventura
The 15-mile paved bike path from Ventura to Ojai starts in downtown, not far from the station. Following the former Ventura and Ojai Railroad, this trail provides a very comfortable ride with only a few slight hills. The scenery is beautiful, with a river, trees and vast open spaces. Even better, it ends in Ojai, a small and serene town with citrus orchards, Spanish Revival architecture, hiking trails and boutiques. The trail along the oceanfront promenade is also great for a shorter ride!
San Juan Capistrano
A 20-minute bike ride takes you from Downtown San Juan Capistrano to the charming harbor village of Dana Point. Pedal along the San Juan Creek trail, with views of the creek and a golf course as you make your way to the ocean. Relax at Doheny State Beach, California’s first state beach, and explore the unique shops of the harbor. Don’t miss the educational exhibits at the Ocean Institute and the tall ship!

Oceanside
The beach town of Oceanside is one of the best destinations for bicyclists, with scenic trails for all rider levels. Enjoy views of the wide, sandy beaches while cruising along The Strand, and continue over the bridge to visit the Cape Cod-style Harbor Village. For a longer trip, head inland on the San Luis Rey Bike Trail and ride 7.5 miles to one of the largest Missions in California.

San Diego
Take your bike on the ferry for a 15-minute cruise across the bay to Coronado Island. Coronado is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, and there are 30 miles of dedicated bike paths offering amazing views. A six-mile loop will take you along the beachfront boardwalk, under the Coronado Bridge and through a few grassy parks.

Remember to observe all local traffic and safety laws when bicycling. Visit Amtrak.com/bikes to learn about bringing your bike on other Amtrak trains. Each route has different equipment and services available for bikes.

Let us know if you have any other tips or favorite destinations. Happy trails!

The Perks of Business Class

You may have taken a trip on the Pacific Surfliner, but have you ever tried riding in Business Class? Treat yourself to an upgraded experience with a few extra perks.

Seating
The Pacific Surfliner unreserved Coach seats are already spacious, but most Business Class cars have even more legroom so you can really stretch and relax. Even better, Business Class riders are guaranteed a seat, which is helpful especially on busy trains which could be standing room only during parts of the trip. And because it’s located at one end of the train, there tends to be less foot-traffic in Business Class, resulting in a more private atmosphere.

Business Class Seats Business Class Group Seats

Snacks and Drinks
We have a great Café Car with fresh food, craft beers, cocktails and more available for purchase. In the Business Class car, riders can also enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks. Each morning, there is coffee, tea, water and juice, as well as pastries from a local bakery. In the afternoons, riders receive a snack pack as well as a soft drink or glass of wine! Our new snack pack comes in a nice box, with snack such as chips, cookies, cheese, gourmet olives and more.

Business Class Morning Snacks Business Class Snack Pack

Other Benefits
Business Class also has a dedicated attendant on most trains, who can answer questions and assist with luggage. There are also free newspapers, and just like the rest of the train, free Wi-Fi.

The perks of Business Class extend beyond the train, starting at the moment you book your trip. Amtrak Guest Rewards members (who earn points with each Amtrak trip they take), get a 25% qualifying point bonus when booking in Business Class. Create an account and start collecting points for a free trip or other rewards.

Not only that, but Business Class passengers starting or ending in Los Angeles get special access to the Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge, located at the station on the second floor. It has complimentary coffee, tea, soft drinks and snacks. Relax on the comfy sofas, watch some TV, read a newspaper or use the free Wi-Fi!

Extra Pacific Surfliner Service and Capacity Added for Comic-Con

San Diego Comic-ConMore than 160,000 people visit San Diego every year for Comic-Con International. The four-day convention has grown to be the largest of its kind in the world, with a 460,000 square foot exhibit hall and more than 700 events, including workshops, panels, film screenings and competitions.

The week of Comic-Con is typically one of the busiest weeks on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, as fans of comic books and pop culture, industry professionals and even cosplayers fill the trains to and from the convention. Last year, more than 44,000 passengers chose to ride with us!

The convention typically falls on the same weekend as the start of the summer racing season at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, so trains are even busier between Los Angeles and Solana Beach (a few stops north of the downtown San Diego Station) during the special events.

Extra Round-Trip Added

To help accommodate the surge in travelers between July 17 and 21, 2019, Amtrak added extra Pacific Surfliner trains between Los Angeles and San Diego.

  • Train 568 was scheduled to depart Los Angeles at 8:50 a.m. on July 17, 18 and 19, 2019, making all Amtrak stops to San Diego, arriving at 12:46 p.m.
  • Train 1568 was scheduled to depart Los Angeles at 10:00 a.m. on July 20 and 21, 2019, making all Amtrak stops to San Diego, arriving at 1:16 p.m.
  • Train 593 was scheduled to depart San Diego at 8:02 p.m. on July 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21, 2019, making all Amtrak stops to Los Angeles, arriving at 11:04 p.m.

Download special train schedules or view all Pacific Surfliner train schedules.

Note: The Rail 2 Rail program with Metrolink and the North County Transit District was suspended between Wednesday, July 17 and Sunday, July 21, 2019. Metrolink and COASTER passes were not be accepted on Pacific Surfliner trains during this period.

Catch the Pacific Surfliner and Ride to the Rose Bowl

International phenomenon BTS came to Pasadena for two sold out stadium concerts at the Rose Bowl on May 4 and 5. Oh my my my!

The concerts are over, but you can save this information about riding the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner to the Rose Bowl for future shows. Here’s how:

1. Find Your Station
The Pacific Surfliner serves stations in San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Find the station closest to you (many offer free parking!) and ride to Los Angeles Union Station.

2. Ride to Los Angeles
On the train, charge your phone, check out the latest BTS updates thanks to free Wi-Fi, and rest your legs in our comfy seats (save your energy for the show!) Tip: Head to the Café car and purchase a discounted one-day LA Metro pass for your connection to Pasadena. Forgot your headphones? We sell those, too, so you can listen to your favorite songs.

3. Connect to Pasadena
Once you arrive at Los Angeles Union Station, follow the signs to the Metro Gold Line. Use the one-day pass you purchased onboard the Pacific Surfliner or purchase one from the vending machine near the boarding area. Board the Metro Gold Line toward APU/Citrus College Station and Exit at Memorial Park Station. You’re now just outside of beautiful Old Town Pasadena.

4. Board the Shuttle
Once you exit the train, follow the signs for two blocks to the Rose Bowl Shuttle pick-up location at Parsons. This shuttle will take you directly to the stadium! Shuttle operations will begin at 3:30 p.m. and continue until 90 minutes after the concert ends.

5. Explore the Best of Old Town Pasadena and Los Angeles
We wouldn’t want you to miss any of the concert, which is why we suggest you stay the night in Los Angeles after the concert ends (our last trip south departs Union Station at 10:22 p.m.) So instead, consider booking a night in one of the charming hotels of Old Town Pasadena, located not far from the shuttle stops. Then, you can spend the next morning and afternoon exploring the boutiques and restaurants of the area before heading back. You can also ride the light rail system to other parts of Los Angeles, including Hollywood, Exposition Park and Koreatown.

Have questions? Ask us on Facebook! And whether you decide to embark on a train adventure to the show or if you decide to drive, we hope you have a great time and that we’ll see you onboard really soon.

New, Cleaner Locomotives Coming to the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Service

Passengers on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner will start seeing new locomotives this fall. A total of 14 Charger locomotives will power the next generation of Pacific Surfliner trains, offering cleaner, greener and more reliable service to nearly 3 million passengers per year between San Diego, Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo.

The new locomotives, which were manufactured by Siemens in their solar-powered plant in Sacramento, were funded by Caltrans with approximately $100 million in state, federal and local funds. They will replace Amtrak-owned F-59 locomotives, which are nearly 20 years old.

The Chargers will be undergoing a required testing through October and November 2018, and will be phased into regular service following successful conclusion of that process. Keep an eye out for them next time you take the train!

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the new locomotives.

This is the cab of the locomotive, where the engineer sits to operate the train. The locomotive offers significant advantages, including improved performance and reliability, a smoother ride, and lower fuel usage.

Each Charger locomotive is powered by a 4,400 horsepower Cummins diesel engine built in Seymour, Indiana. The 16-cylinder engine is fuel-efficient and has the potential to use renewable diesel. It can also power longer trains, which will support growing ridership demand.

The Charger locomotives include crash energy management components such as a reinforced locomotive cab and push-back couplers. Each locomotive weighs 267,000 pounds, and is nearly 15 feet tall!

The Charger is the first passenger locomotive to receive the stringent Tier IV emissions certification from the Environmental Protection Agency, making the Charger one of the cleanest diesel-electric passenger locomotives currently in operation. In fact, they will reduce emissions by 90% over the current Pacific Surfliner locomotives!
